Beautifully toned and of very severe style

CELTIC, Lower Danube. Imitations of Thasos. Late 2nd-1st century BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 31 mm, 16.45 g, 12 h). Celticized head of Dionysos to right, wearing wreath of ivy and fruit. Rev. Celticized Herakles standing front, head to left, holding club in his right hand and lion skin formed out of dots in his left; legend degraded to dots. Dembski 1529 (same dies). Flesche -. Lanz 991 var. (cruder style). OTA Class 5, pl. 48, 5 (same dies, but reworked). A beautifully toned piece of very severe style. Minor porosity, otherwise, extremely fine.

It was common practice in Celtic mints to rework old dies, as we see with this piece, which was struck from an earlier die state as OTA pl. 48, 5.
